Roughly 30 minutes from the town of Charlottesville is a charming vineyard surrounded by beautiful mountains and green pastures spotted with grazing horses. Established in 2003, Knight’s Gambit Vineyard has over five acres of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, and Cabernet Franc grapes. As you drive up the gravel lane, you’ll notice the solar panels lining the roof. Just as the grapevines absorb the sunlight to grow and eventually be transformed into wine, the panels harvest that same sun and convert it into usable energy. With a passion for wine and the environment, Knight’s Gambit Vineyard produces several varietals of wine with estate-grown grapes.

Red, White, and Rosé

Knight’s Gambit has a nice balance of wines, from crisp whites to bold reds. The Chardonnay is bright and fruit-forward  with green apple flavors. French oak barrels give it a nice smooth finish and add a hint of vanilla flavor. In contrast to the buttery Chardonnay, the Pinot Grigio is a light, refreshing wine with notes of citrus. A touch of sweetness makes the Pinot Grigio an amazing porch wine for a hot summer day.

Of course, another wine that is a summer favorite, especially in the Central Virginia area, is rosé. While some rosé wines can lean toward the sweeter side, the rosé at Knight’s Gambit is a dry, Merlot-based wine. With a gorgeous light pink coloring due to the use of grape skins, rosé is an easy-drinking wine for the warmer summer months. For those who prefer red wines but need something lighter when the weather warms up, rosé is the perfect middle ground. Knight’s Gambit doesn’t shy away from bold reds, either. The Meritage, a delicious blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, is rich in color and flavor with hints of black pepper and dark fruit.
