With all that’s happening in the world, we have had to undergo changes that have changed our everyday lives. With social distancing, what may have once been your office job has you working from home. If this is not something you have prepared for, which is most likely the case, transitioning to working from home can be difficult! How do you separate your life from work if you’re home the whole time? Luckily, we have some tips for working from home.
Get Up Early
Working from home gives you the gift of sleeping in later than you would if you had to go to an office. Although it is incredibly tempting to wake up 10 minutes before you have to start work, it’s important to give yourself some structure. Wake up about an hour ahead of time so you can eat your breakfast and prepare for the day! This will allow you time to relax before it comes time to work. It will also give your day more of a routine, almost as if you are getting ready to leave your home for the day to work.
Another way to keep your motivation at home is to get dressed! Again, it is tempting to stay in your pajamas all day, and some days, go right ahead! However, it can make you feel a little too comfortable and relaxed. If you’re having a hard time staying motivated at home, this can only make it worse. Of course, you don’t need to get all dressed up in business professional attire. However, putting some effort into your outfit can make you feel more prepared and motivated to take on a workday.
Designate an Area for Work
In general, it can be difficult to separate your work life from your home life when you work out of your house. When you associate your home as a place you come to relax and enjoy family time, it’s difficult to direct your focus to work there as well. To combat this, designate an area of your space for your work. Whether that be a set up at the kitchen table, or perhaps a desk in your bedroom. Regardless, it’s important to set up a workspace in which you are able to focus on your tasks for the day.
Set Specific Hours for Work
When you work from home, it’s important to keep your work and home life separate. With that being said, designate hours for work, and hours for family, fun, and relaxation. Perhaps you have to work from 9 to 5, or even 6. Be sure that you have a point where you can turn off your work brain, and relax. Of course, there are sometimes unexpected projects and tasks that need to be completed. However, be sure to draw a line as to when you will stop working and start to unwind after the workday.
Plan Out Your Day
It is important to stay on a schedule when you work from home. Every morning or the night before work, look at your upcoming tasks. What must be done? What can you push back a couple of days? Write down a to-do list of the most important tasks you want to accomplish for the day. This will allow you to form and meet your goals, keeping your motivation for work high.
It can be hard to turn your home into your office, but there are plenty of ways that you can set yourself up for success. Designate a space and a time, and act as if you are really going to work!
